Best Areas for Retirees in Myrtle Beach
There is no official ranking of the best areas for retirees in Myrtle Beach. Buyers often compare North Myrtle Beach, Surfside Beach, Murrells Inlet, and inland 55+ communities such as those near Carolina Forest for different weeks. Sherman Beach Group at eXp Realty matches the town to healthcare access, stairs, HOA rules, and flood, not a slogan.
“Best” is the word people type. It is not a list Sherman Beach Group will pretend to have scored. A retiree who wants a single-level condo and a short drive to doctors is not the same buyer as someone who wants a golf cart and the pier. The fit is the week you will live in January, not a magazine ranking.
The areas clients actually compare are below, with links into the inventory. Age-restricted communities have their own rules. Read 55+ communities before you assume a subdivision is age-qualified because the neighbors look retired.

Beach towns people compare
North Myrtle Beach is four shoreline communities and a slower winter than the central strip. Golf-cart streets are real in parts of it. Surfside Beach is smaller, between Myrtle Beach and Garden City, with cottages and condos rather than a long skyline. Murrells Inlet draws people who want marsh and the MarshWalk more than a boardwalk.
Central Myrtle Beach has more condos, more services close together, and more summer traffic. That density is a reason some people stay and a reason some people sleep in Surfside. The three-town comparison goes further.
Inland and age-qualified
Carolina Forest and parts of Conway are where buyers trade a walk to the sand for a single-level house, a garage, and a shorter list of stairs. Cresswind is the named 55+ community on this site. Other age-qualified neighborhoods exist. The covenants, not the brochure, say who may buy.
Medical offices are spread along the strand and inland. This page does not rank hospitals or publish drive times as guarantees. Visit the offices you would actually use. Stairs, elevator reliance, and flood insurance belong in the same conversation as the clubhouse.
What to decide before you tour
One level or stairs. Association rules or a detached house. Primary residence, which affects the 4% versus 6% tax classification, or a part-year home. Whether a flood zone is acceptable after you read the flood guide. Those four answers remove more towns than a “best of” list does.
Call Lane Sherman at (717) 778-1554 or contact Sherman Beach Group. The relocating guide covers the move itself. We will not call a town the winner.
Questions about Best Areas for Retirees in Myrtle Beach

- There is no official ranking. Buyers usually compare North Myrtle Beach, Surfside Beach, Murrells Inlet, Myrtle Beach condos, and inland 55+ or single-level houses for different reasons.
Are 55+ communities required if I am retired?
- No. Many retirees buy in ordinary neighborhoods. Age-qualified communities add covenants about who may live there. Read them.
Is the beach a better retirement choice than Carolina Forest?
- It depends on stairs, insurance, dues, and how often you need the sand versus a garage. Neither is a default.
Does this page list healthcare rankings?
